Here you will find the Net Pay Worksheet for a really great high school budget project! This is very effective and can cause students to really think and begin to take their education seriously. It takes about two weeks with block scheduling. This is the second in a series of 8 posts about the budget project.

Teacher Directions for Day 2 of Budget Project:
For Day 2, the students will draw their education level and then calculate their net pay. Click here to get the education level cards. This ties really well in to the “Getting Paid” unit of instruction where they learn about all the deductions from their paycheck. On the back of this worksheet is a bonus worksheet where they take their “Net Pay Worksheet” numbers and plug that into a Pay Stub. You’ll also want to go over how to use Excel and Powerpoint with them at this time, before they get into the computer lab.
One thing I learned when teaching this for the first time: Students have no frame of reference for a database, spreadsheet, or the use of Excel software. I would recommend explaining Excel and how it works, and made sure to review it for those who were absent. They had no idea that the numbers could add in the columns until I showed it to them.
